THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, DON'T FORGET THE "TAGS FOR BAGS"
* THIS RELEASE APPLIES ONLY TO HOMES RECEIVING AUTOMATED GARBAGE COLLECTION SERVICE FROM THE CITY OF HOUSTON
December 18, 2003 - The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department is reminding its customers that they can obtain “Tags for Bags” stickers for their additional bags of garbage or boxes generated during the holiday season.
Houston residents will continue to have their first 90-gallon can serviced free-of-charge. However, any extra bag(s) of garbage will only be collected if there is a special extra capacity tag (Tags for Bags) sticker attached. The “Tags for Bags” program allows residents the convenience of purchasing “tags” instead of additional cans if they require extra service only occasionally. Tags for bags may be purchased at local Fiesta, H.E.B., Kroger and Sellers Bros. supermarkets for a fee of one dollar ($1.00) per tag plus tax. Please note that tags are required for boxes if they are not placed out on the citizen's scheduled heavy trash day or curbside recycling day.
Residents may also download the “Tags for Bags” Order Form from the Solid Waste Management Department website ( www.houstonsolidwaste.org ) and send their completed form and payment through the mail. A $3 service charge will be required for e-mail, phone, or mail orders. “Tags for Bags” may be purchased for a fee of one dollar ($1.00) per tag plus tax. E-mail, phone or mail orders must be purchased in increments of five (5).
On June 19, 2002, Houston's City Council approved an ordinance amending Article IV of Chapter 39 of the Houston Code of Ordinances, approving and authorizing the creation of an Extra Capacity Collection Fee (ECC) for the Solid Waste Management Department.
