CITY COMBINES FORCES TO CLEANUP STORM DEBRIS

November 20, 2003 - The City of Houston's Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) will be combining its forces with the Parks and Public Works and Engineering Departments to address the areas that have high water or high wind damages as a result of last Monday's storm. Storm debris pickup will begin this Saturday, November 22nd.

According to Charles Ross, SWMD Deputy Director, "Over the weekend, we will activate and combine enough resources to work in all the affected areas simultaneously. We have conducted windshield surveys of the heaviest hit areas, however, we are requesting that Houstonians with high water or high wind damages call 311 to notify us that they need storm debris pickup." Residents in the city's contract area will also have their storm debris collected this weekend.

Customers with fallen tree limbs or home damages should have their debris on the curb by Saturday. SWMD Director Thomas Buchanan said, "Remember, crews cannot go onto private property. All debris must be placed on the curb to be removed." Small remnants of storm debris may be placed in bags (not to exceed 50 pounds) this weekend.

SWMD is requesting that yard trimmings and other storm debris not be placed in the automated garbage collection container. Yard trimmings (leaves, grass, etc.) should be placed in garbage bags not weighing more than 50 pounds. Houston residents may also utilize these SWMD neighborhood depository facilities to dispose of their storm debris:
