EMPLOYEES IN GARBAGE TRUCK ROAD-E-O COMPETE FOR "TRASH TALKING" RIGHTS

May 18, 2005 - The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) will host its 16th Annual Truck Drivers' and Mechanics' Road-E-O competition on Saturday, May 21, 2005, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Northwest Service Center located at 1245 Judiway (Key Map 452P).

"Our annual ROAD-E-O is a fun-filled event where drivers and mechanics get to show their abilities. More important than the opportunity to advance to the state level, the winners enjoy the bragging rights of being the best in their field," says Safety Manager Frank C. Lopez.

  • In this year's Road-E-O, SWMD drivers will maneuver trash trucks, tractor-trailers and automated garbage trucks through an obstacle course simulating daily real-life situations. Drivers will be competing against each other in their respective truck category in a timed setting as they weave through cones, avoid barricades and demonstrate their other dexterous skills.
  • The Mechanics portion of the Road-E-O will consist of a written examination and a troubleshooting skill competition. Each contestant will be given a list of vehicle problems and the individual whosolves the most problems in the allotted time will be the winner.

The 1st and 2nd place winners will qualify for the state championship sponsored by the Texas Chapter of the Solid Waste Association (TxSWANA) of North America in Austin, Texas on September 30, 2005. The 1st and 2nd place winners from the state competition will compete in the international championship that will be held in Hickory, North Carolina on October 22, 2005.

The Solid Waste Management Department Road-E-O consistently attracts participants who reflect the highest standards within their chosen solid waste professions. The spirit of competition and goodwill, coupled with camaraderie and a family atmosphere, make this annual Road-E-O a fun-filled event for all.
