"YOU CALL, WE HAUL" PILOT PROGRAM BEGINS IN THIRD WARD
March 11, 2004 - The City of Houston is beginning a heavy trash pilot program named “You Call, We Haul.” This pilot program will run from March 15, 2004 to June 15, 2004 (duration of 90 days). The pilot area is I-45 to the North, US 288 to the West, Old Spanish Trail to the South, Texas Spur 5/Calhoun to the East.
“You Call, We Haul” is a heavy trash on demand initiative that would replace the current system of running trucks on routes once per month. By calling 311, each single-family residential address in the pilot program area can receive up to three heavy trash pickups anytime within the 90-day period. The Solid Waste Management will service the request within five working days.
Mayor Bill White says, “We are eager to see the results of the “You Call, We Haul” program. We believe that the residents will like the opportunity to dispose of their heavy trash when they want. Also, we anticipate that we will see an increase of recycling, composting, and scrap sales; reduced overtime costs; and improved enforcement of illegal dumpsites.” Mayor White adds, “If the pilot program is successful, the “You Call, We Haul” program will be considered for expansion in other neighborhoods, as part of our overall goal of improving the efficiency of your government.”
