Conceived in recognition of the City of Houston's 150th birthday in 1986, the Gazebo and Promenade areas offer a beautiful multi-level setting on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou (between Texas Ave. and Preston) adjacent to the Wortham Center. Cascading waterfalls and distinctive lighting make this area a popular setting for photo shoots and weddings. Event planners can take advantage of the waterway, green spaces, hike-and-bike trails, boat launches and other nearby venues (such as Bayou Place and the Aquarium Restaurant and Entertainment Facility) to put together a multi-faceted event. Artist Mel Chin's seven 70-foot pillars pay tribute to Houston past and present.

The second phase of the park opened in May 1998. The one-block green space, The Common (on Preston, between Bagby and Smith), has been the site of the Buffalo Bayou Regatta, crawfish festivals and other events.
