Kendall Library Re-Opening Celebration
The Houston Public Library (HPL) invites everyone to join the grand re-opening celebration of the Belle Sherman Kendall Neighborhood Library and Community Center (609 N. Eldridge Pkwy, Houston, TX 77079) on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.
The Kendall Library was damaged by rising flood waters during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, when approximately 48” of flood water remained in the building for up to two weeks without air conditioning or power. The first floor, the roof, siding, furniture and other materials were affected by the storm. Federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency was used to repair the building and to implement flood mitigation measures. The library is set to reopen its doors and once again offer its free services and resources to the community.
Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks delivered by Mayor Sylvester Turner, HPL's Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson and City Council Member Mary Nan Huffman of District G, customers can explore the renovated facilities during an open house event, featuring various activity stations. HPL shares the first floor with Houston Parks and Recreation, which is offering fitness classes and games. Local vendors are providing tasty treats. Parking for the reopening celebration event is located at 777 Eldridge Pkwy.
About the renovation
Architect firm Robert Adams, Inc., designed the restorations, and Gadberry Construction performed the extensive restorations to the 28,000 square-foot facility. The project included new interior finishes, windows, and ceilings; new furniture and technology equipment; a new roofing system; an enhanced electrical system; and reconfigured and expanded spaces to include an adult reading room, an adult quiet room, a children's area with dedicated space for toddlers, a relaxing place just for teens, a training room and a large conference room.
