It's Labor of Love Weekend at BARC
Name-Your-Own-Adoption-Fee Friday, August 31 - Sunday, September 2
Mayor Annise Parker's Pets of the Week

BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions is celebrating Labor Day weekend with "Labor of Love," a Name-Your-Own-Adoption-Fee event this Friday, August 31- Sunday, September 2, 2012 at BARC 3200 Carr Street, Houston, 77026 from noon to 6 p.m. This special event allows Houstonians to name their own adoption fee for dogs and cats who are at least 4 months old and ready to go home with their forever family! A $5 minimum adoption fee is required.

These animals are spayed or neutered, have all age-appropriate vaccinations, a city license and a microchip. The adoption package could cost up to $850 if purchased through certain breeders or veterinarians!

BARC and 49 other animal shelters across the nation are competing in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge to save at least 300 more lives compared to their total between August 1 and October 31, 2011. The shelter that saves the most lives compared to their 2011 total during the three month period, wins the $100,000 grand prize grant. So far, 600 BARC dogs and cats have gone home with their forever families. BARC hopes to reach at least 2,100 dog and cat adoptions before October 31.

Callie, a 17-week old Calico and Domestic Short Hair mix, is an adorable kitty that has quite a story to tell. She came into BARC when she was very, very tiny. In fact, she had to go home with one of BARC's foster pet parents who bottle fed and socialized her until she was ready for adoption. She is a little bit skittish and shy, but loves to be held and has lots of love to give. Now, she is healthy and ready to go home with her new family! Her Animal ID is A1084118.

Jerry, a one and a half year-old Black Mouth Cur and Basset Hound mix, is an absolutely adorable dog that wants to be your best friend as soon as he meets you. He's playful and energetic, but gives lots of kisses and has plenty of love to give. He came into BARC a little over a month ago as a stray and was already neutered. Now, he is fully vetted and ready to go home with his forever family! His Animal ID is A1089400.

From sweet little Calico kitten mixes like Callie, to full-grown Black Mouth Cur mixes like Jerry, BARC has many pets available for adoption in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors and ages. Jerry and Callie are two of many animals at BARC who have been spayed or neutered, have age-appropriate vaccinations, a city license and a microchip. Update on last week's Mayor's Pets of the Week: Senorita, the German Shepherd/Pointer/Doberman Pinscher mix has been adopted! Chance, the adorable and playful Brown Tabby Domestic Short Hair kitten is still available for adoption. Chance's Animal ID is A1094540.
