City of Houston Hires Business Executive David Atencio as New General Manager of
BARC and Announces Plan for $10 million Animal Campus and Adoption Center

David Atencio has been selected to lead the City of Houston Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC).  Atencio served as Vice President for Business Operations and Marketing Sales for 24 Hour Fitness, with over 20 years business management experience overseeing large, complex operations in which he has successfully led and developed employees, and built customer relations. BARC is currently being led by organization turnaround expert Gerry Fusco, who will remain through early February.  Atencio will work closely with Fusco and will transition smoothly into the leadership role as Fusco's tenure nears its end.

To advance his vision that Houston pets find caring homes and quality care, Mayor Bill White has announced the plans for a 5.5 acre site which will house a 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art "green" adoption center for dogs and cats from the City's Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC), together with a low-cost veterinary clinic and a three acre dog park open to the public. The campus will be constructed on a city-owned site in Gragg Park, along Brays Bayou and Wayside Drive and adjacent to the newly refurbished headquarters for Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The new center, to be named the Ann Young Animal Adoption Center, will enable the City to find homes for many more BARC pets by providing an attractive, well located family-friendly center in one of the City's beautiful parks.  For more information, visit  https://www.houstontx.gov/barc/20091218.html
