Community event to celebrate grand re-opening of newly renovated J. W. Peavy Senior Center

Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston Health Department will celebrate the grand re-opening of the newly renovated J. W. Peavy Senior Center on Thursday, September 12 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The community event in the historic Fifth Ward neighborhood will offer area residents information about services and resources available at the health department center where BakerRipley offers senior health and wellness services. Mayor Turner, health department representatives and civic leaders will take part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The extensive $3.6 million renovation focuses on the needs of the senior community with configuration and functionality improvements, new paving and sidewalks and replacement of the kitchen and restrooms. Other improvements include a new projection system, large televisions, upgrades to the community garden and courtyards, new fencing, new outdoor seating, new flooring and interior and exterior finishes.

Daily activities at the center include free hot nutritious lunches, Tai Chi, group and individual exercise, health self-management classes, games, sewing, arts and crafts, computer training and access and opportunities to contribute and give back to the greater Fifth Ward community.
