Proposed Changes to Precious Metals Ordinance
Presented at Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee Meeting, January 22

The Houston Police Department (HPD) has proposed changes to the Precious Metals Section of the City of Houston Code of Ordinances. The proposed changes were initially discussed at the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee Meeting on August 28, 2012. After receiving feedback from attendees at that meeting, some revisions were made. HPD will be presenting the amended proposal at the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee. The meeting is open to the public.

Monetary losses from jewelry-related crimes have risen as the value of precious metals has increased. In order to reduce the number of crimes and recover more stolen property involving these types of items, HPD has established a Precious Metals Unit.

The Precious Metals Unit mission is to:

  • Reduce high end burglaries that involve stolen jewelry
  • Educate business owners on the law
  • Monitor second hand jewelry dealers and gold buyers
  • And identify dealers that fence stolen property

For more information on the Precious Metals Unit and/or the proposed amendments, contact Sergeant Chris Yorloff at HPDPMU@houstonpolice.org or 832.394.1359. To learn more about HPD, visit www.houstonpolice.org.
