ReBuild Houston Project Notification
Sunnyside Asphalt Street Overlay Project

The ReBuild Houston Initiative is the City of Houston's voter-initiated plan to rebuild drainage and street infrastructure. ReBuild Houston will help improve quality of life and mobility for residents through the reconstruction and proper maintenance of drainage and street improvements. The Sunnyside Asphalt Street Overlay project is an active example of ReBuild Houston at work to better serve you.

The Sunnyside Asphalt Street Overlay Project (Council District D), will improve streets in the area by removing old asphalt and replacing with a new asphalt driving surface. The project began in January 2013. It will include work on a total of 24 streets or 22.5 miles between Scott Street, Highway 288, Holmes Road and Bellfort. Completion is expected on February 28, 2013. The outcome will be an improved driving surface in this area.

Overlay extends the life of the roadway and addresses only the riding surface. The first crew is a milling crew that removes the old asphalt surface. Depending on the thickness of the existing asphalt, the City will remove 2" to 6" of material during this process. Once the old asphalt is removed, a second crew will move in with an asphalt paving machine and apply a new asphalt surface between 1" to 2" thick. The City expects an overlay project to have a minimum life of five years and in some cases lasting up to 20 years.
