Reliant Light Mayor's Holiday Spectacular
2019 Entertainment - Vonnie Lopez
SOur testimonies make us, shape us and give us a story to tell. For Vonnie Lopez, her story is beyond believable. Most people who have heard her voice will never know that she was born tone deaf. Who says that prayer doesn’t change things? Vonnie knows that it does.
As a solo artist, and a member of the GRAMMY and Stellar Award-winning ensemble, The Kurt Carr Singers, Vonnie has sung with the best in the industry including Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Tramaine Hawkins, Natalie Cole, Marvin Sapp, Cece Winans, Marvin Winans, Fred Hammond, and the late Walter Hawkins…and many more. God has clearly opened doors for Vonnie and she has been privileged to be featured on global television networks such as: TBN, Daystar, and the Inspiration Channel.
Vonnie’s story begins in a small town in Louisiana. In the little southern town, Gospel music was frequently heard coming from the Ewing’s home. Songs by artists like Rev. James Cleveland, The Hawkins Family, and The Richard Smallwood Singers were heard regularly, and the Preacher’s daughter was captured by sounds of the music and the anointing on the artists. Bishop Murrell Ewing, Vonnie’s father, was not only a preacher, but a singer as well. Her mother was a classically trained pianist and songwriter extraordinaire. As a matter of fact, everyone in Vonnie’s household sung, but Vonnie. She had been born tone-deaf. Not one to discourage his daughter, her father would say, “God’s gonna give you something special one day, baby…You just wait on God.”
Believing that there was power in prayer, Vonnie sought to gain the musical talent that genetics had deprived her of. She prayed daily, “God if you will give me a voice to sing, I promise, for the rest of my life, I will sing to you and I will sing for you, alone.” And then one day it happened, she found herself singing in front of her church belting out her favorite song, “My Vow.” God had done exactly what she had prayed for; He had given her a voice to worship Him in singing.
She married Bay Area gospel musician and producer, Aaron Lopez, and together they held many gospel music workshops and recorded live workshop albums with their NorCal Mass choir, SoCal Mass, Louisiana All-State Choir, and CLC Youth Choir.
Vonnie recently received an invitation to participate on the CBS show, “The World’s Best” where she was honored to sing praises to God on national tv. Show host James Corden, and show judges, Faith Hill, Drew Barrymore, and RuPaul, were moved to tears and Faith Hill declared to the audience, “What you just felt was the Holy Spirit. That was the anointing. She just took us to church.”
But music and singing are just part of the ministry of Vonnie Lopez. She’s also a Minister of the Gospel, as well as a First Lady, and the administrator of a school. Alongside her husband, Pastor Aaron Lopez, they serve as co-pastors of Eastwood Pentecostal Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A wife and a mother to two wonderful children, Aaron James and Lindsey Brooke, Vonnie’s hands are full.
As much as she enjoys all the opportunities she’s been given, for Vonnie, it all comes down to worship.
"People call me a worship leader, but really I am just a worshipper – and my assignment is to lead the people into God’s presence,” says Vonnie. “When we enter the presence of God, anything and everything is possible. Healing takes place. Miracles unfold. Deliverance happens. All in His presence. I just want to take them to Jesus, because I know that in His presence is everything they need.”
