Quarterly neighborhood cleanup projects target properties with nuisance violations
March 2, 2013 -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker was joined today by civic leaders and community volunteers in Sunnyside for the launch of Make Safe Saturday, a new neighborhood cleanup initiative that will occur every quarter in communities throughout the city.
"Making our neighborhoods safer is one of my top priorities," said Mayor Parker. "Make Safe Saturday is a call to action. Let's work together as a community by rolling up our sleeves, boarding up abandoned buildings and clearing lots that are crime havens. Together we can help make our neighborhoods a better place to call home."
Volunteers are needed to help with beautification projects, de-littering, mowing and the removal of trash and debris from abandoned buildings. Donations of supplies and materials by local businesses are welcome. To volunteer, contact Andrea Jackson-Taylor at email@example.com or 832.394.0660.
A total of 96 blighted properties will be cleaned in this first round of Make Safe Saturday, with the work to be completed by the end of March 2013. The projects will target blighted properties that are in violation of City codes but do not meet the criteria for demolition. These are properties for which owners have been cited for nuisance violations and have failed to take action to correct the problems.
To kick off the initiative, City crews and neighborhood volunteers cleaned 8 blighted properties in the 5100 block of Mallow Street. Workers boarded up abandoned homes, cleared weeds, mowed overgrown grass and removed heavy trash and debris from the premises.
The initiative is a collaborative effort among the following City departments and divisions: Inspections & Public Services, a division of the Department of Neighborhoods, Public Works & Engineering Department, Solid Waste Management Department, BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions, a division of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department and the Houston Police Department. Keep Houston Beautiful is providing equipment, supplies and materials for the cleanup projects.
The next Make Safe Saturday is scheduled for June 2013.
