Press Release
City Partners with DEA for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
April 27, 2012 -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker announces the launch of the City of Houston’s Identity Theft Prevention Initiative, sponsored by the Mayor’s Citizens’ Assistance Office, a division of the Department of Neighborhoods, in collaboration with the Houston Police Department and corporate partner Data Shredding Services of Texas, Inc. (DSS). The new initiative calls for a series of monthly events at HPD stations that will offer identity theft prevention education and document shredding services to individual Houston residents. The shredding service will be provided free of charge by DSS.
The inaugural event will take place on Saturday, April 28, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at HPD’s Westside Station, 3203 S. Dairy Ashford, Houston, TX 77082. In partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Westside Station will also serve as a designated drop-off site for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. This one-day event will offer residents an opportunity to drop off expired or unused prescription medications for safe disposal by the DEA.
“We want to help educate residents about basic measures they can take against becoming the subject of identity theft,” said Mayor Parker. “One way is by safeguarding personal information. The City is greatly appreciative of Data Shredding Services’ generosity and commitment to provide secure shredding services for individual residents.”
“We know that many residents do not have access to personal shredding equipment or are perhaps not aware of how to properly dispose of their confidential documents,” said Data Shredding Services CEO Shafer Gabrel. “DSS is pleased to help by providing our state of the art shredding equipment and offering this service to residents free of charge.”
