Title: Standing Vase With Five Flowers

The monumental metal sculpture Standing Vase With Five Flowers was created by native Texan James Surls in 2005. Its purchase was approved by Houston City Council on August 18, 2010, and was installed on the grounds of Gragg Park in November of that year.
Surls was born in 1943 and was graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1966 and Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1968. He founded Houston’s Lawndale Art Center and taught at Southern Methodist University from 1969 to 1976. His work has been displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Albright Knox, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim of Art, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, the Meadows Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art, and the University of Houston’s Blaffer Gallery. His steel and wood sculptures have been well received in outdoor exhibitions on the campus of Rice University, and on Park Avenue in New York City. His Points of View has been the centerpiece of Market Square Park since 1991.
