HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant
T.D. McCabe and Officers R.C. Stafford and I.M. Labdi reported:
HPD Officer S.A. Borak was on-duty and enroute
to a shooting call as he drove southbound in the 4000 block of
Hollister. As he drove through the block, he ran over what he
believed to be a board in the roadway. Officer Borak noticed damage
to his radiator and stopped at HFD fire station #5. There, he
called one of his patrol supervisors to report damage to his vehicle.
A very short time later, an auto/pedestrian call was heard in
the 4000 block of Hollister. Upon hearing the call, Officer Borak
realized that he might have struck a pedestrian lying in the street,
and not a board. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the pedestrian
dead at the scene. Officer Borak, assigned to the Northwest Patrol
Division, was sworn in as an HPD officer in December 2002.
As is customary in a fatal incident involving
an officer, the Internal Affairs Division is investigating the
case. IAD investigators went to the scene to interview witnesses.
However, due to the witnesses being highly intoxicated at the
time, they were detained for public intoxication and will be asked
to provide statements about the accident at a later time. The
investigation is continuing.
