Suspect Arrested in Real Estate Scam, Other Victims Sought

March 29, 2007 -- The HPD Major Offenders Division is seeking additional victims of a suspect arrested and charged with felony theft at 8405 Almeda Genoa on March 19, 2007.

The suspect, Elvia Rosas Diaz, (H/f, DOB- 6-16-61), is charged with felony theft in the 339th State District Court. She posed as a loan officer at a southeast Houston real estate office and stole money from several victims.

HPD Major Offenders Division Officer S. R. Chen reported:

Diaz was employed as a receptionist at the office located at 8405 Almeda Genoa where she represented herself as a loan officer to several customers. The suspect would handle real estate transactions and obtained cash payments from the victims to cover down payments or other mortgage related costs. Several customers attempted to contact Diaz unsuccessfully and later learned they lost their money when they discovered the business had closed down.

As of this date, four victims have been located and were found to have lost over $30,000. The majority of victims in these cases are undocumented Spanish speaking immigrants who may be afraid to call the police and report the crime.
