Suspects Arrested in Fatal Shooting at 10211 Sugar Branch Drive

August 20, 2008 - Charges have been filed against two suspects arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 10211 Sugar Branch Drive about 4:30 p.m. on January 11.

The suspects, Derrick Portis, (b/m, DOB: 09-23-89) and Darrell A. Jones (b/m, DOB: 10-07-86), are each charged with murder in the 180th State District Court. They are accused in the killing of Gerry Morran Coles, 22, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at Ben Taub General Hospital.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants C.M. Cegielski and E.B. Cisneros reported:

Mr. Coles and a female were walking through the parking lot of an apartment complex when they were approached by Portis and Jones, who began shooting at Coles. The female ran from the area and was not injured.

A follow up investigation identified Portis and Jones as suspects in this case.
