Special Instructions for HPD Officer’s Funeral

December 10, 2008 - At 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec.12, funeral services will be held for HPD Police Officer Timothy Scott Abernethy at the Champion Forest Baptist Church at 15555 Stuebner-Airline Road.

The Houston Police Department is requesting all media to arrive at the church between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Officers will direct news media live trucks and vehicles to park in a designated area on the north side of the church. KHOU-TV Channel 11 will be operating a pool camera for all media and will make its live truck available for all media outlets to plug into to receive video and audio of the service. HPD public information officers will be in the parking lot to assist media with questions and coverage.

No cameras or media representatives will be allowed inside the church.

Officer Abernethy, 43, of the North Patrol Division, was fatally shot in the line of duty during a traffic stop on Sunday (Dec.7). He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Immediately following the funeral, a “Wall of Honor”ceremony will be held outside the front entrance to the church.

There will not be a burial service.

The media is asked to help inform area motorists and those attending the service to plan on using alternate routes due to heavy traffic congestion.
