Suspect Arrested in Fatal Shooting at 6900 East Orem

November 20, 2008 - Charges are pending against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man found at 6900 East Orem about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 16).

The suspect, David Van Collins (b/m, DOB: 3-14-84) faces a capital murder charge in the killing of Daniel Dwayne Wheeler, 31, of Houston. Mr. Wheeler suffered multiple gunshots and was pronounced dead at the scene. Collins is also charged in a separate case with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 263rd State District Court.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J.D. Shirley and Officer J. Robles reported:

A person looking for a lost dog found Mr.Wheeler deceased, in the grass under a bridge near East Orem and Mykawa. Wheeler’s wife reported him missing since he had not been seen since 6 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 14) at a restaurant at West Oaks Mall.

Further investigation developed information identifying David Van Collins as the suspect in this case. On Wednesday (Nov. 19) Collins was arrested in the 5800 block of Southbank and later confessed to his role in the crime. Collins also confessed to his involvement in a separate robbery at the same location (6900 Orem) on Nov. 11, 2008.
