Suspect Charged in Second Fatal Shooting

November 21, 2008 - A suspect already arrested and charged in one fatal shooting on Nov. 16 is now charged in the fatal shooting of a man found at 6800 East Orem on October 12.

The suspect, David Van Collins (b/m, DOB: 3-14-84), is charged with capital murder in the 184th State District Court. He is accused in the killing of Drew Adair Schendel, 23, of Friendswood. Mr. Schendel suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Collins is also charged in a separate capital murder in the same court for the Nov. 16 killing of Daniel Dwayne Wheeler, 31, of Houston. In addition, Collins is charged in a third case with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 263rd State District Court for his role in the kidnapping and aggravated robbery of a man on Nov. 11.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officers J. C. Bonaby and R. Swainson reported:

Patrol officers found the body of Mr. Schendel at the 6800 block of East Orem. He had been shot several times. An investigation determined Schendel left his home in a black Honda Accord, which was later recovered at an apartment complex on Broadway.

Further investigation developed information identifying David Van Collins as the suspect in this case. On Wednesday (Nov. 19), Collins was arrested in the 5800 block of Southbank and later confessed to his role in Schendel’s murder. Collins also confessed to his involvement in the fatal shooting at 6900 East Orem on Nov. 16 and a robbery at the same location (6900 Orem) on Nov. 11.
