Fatal Shooting at 5000 Chapman

October 6, 2008 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man and the wounding of a woman and two other males at 5000 Chapman about 11:20 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 3).

The victim, Mark Anthony Sanchez, 25, of Houston, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother of the victim, Maria DeJesus Sanchez, 45, suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition, but is expected to survive her injuries. The victim’s brother, Christopher Paul Sanchez, 26, suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is expected to survive his injury. Another male, Israel Rangel, 19, suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officers X. Avila and R. Cervantes reported:

Mark Sanchez got into a physical fight with a suspect, who obtained a firearm and shot at Sanchez several times. While the suspect was shooting, Maria and Christopher Sanchez tried to pull Mark to safety when they were shot. Rangel, a bystander, was also shot by a stray bullet.

Officers detained four people for questioning in this case.
