Suspect Charged in 1990 Capital Murder

October 16, 2008 - Charges have been filed against a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a man at 2507 Montrose on July 5, 1990.

The suspect, Manual Cardona (H/m, DOB: 7/28/66), is charged with capital murder in the 338th State District Court. He is accused in the killing of Donn Vorse, 44, of Houston, who suffered stab wounds to the neck and died at the scene. Cardona is currently confined in the Texas Department of Corrections on an unrelated charge.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant E.S. Mehl reported:

When Mr. Vorse did not show up for work on the afternoon of July 5, 1990, two of his co-workers decided to check on his well being. After not getting a response at Vorse’s door and having been told that his wallet and keys were found a distance away from the apartment, they (co-workers) called police to investigate. Responding officers entered the apartment and found Vorse deceased with what appeared to be a stab wound to the neck. No suspects were identified at the time.

In April 2008, biological evidence collected at the original scene was sent to Orchid Cellmark in an effort to obtain DNA profiles from the submitted blood samples (evidence). A match was found and in September 2008, that DNA profile was entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). In October 2008, CODIS reported a match was made between the DNA profile submitted and that of a known offender already in the CODIS system, identified as Manuel Cardona.

Investigators subsequently charged Cardona on Wednesday (Oct. 15) with capital murder in the 1990 case.
