Fatal Traffic Accident at 100 U.S. Highway 59 North

October 17, 2008 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 100 block of the Eastex Freeway (U.S. Highway 59 North) about 6:45 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 16).

The identity of the deceased female victim is being withheld pending notification to her family members by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant N.A. Perry and Officer E. McClelland reported:

Witnesses said the victim was driving a Toyota Corolla north on the Eastex Freeway when her vehicle struck an 18-wheeler driving in an adjacent lane. The victim’s car began to spin out of control and then burst into flames, killing the driver on the scene.

The left side gas tank of the 18-wheeler was ruptured and all of its diesel fuel spilled on the freeway mainlanes. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The investigation is continuing.
