Narcotics Suspect Arrested, Charged at 1500 North Eldridge Parkway

October 30, 2008 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested following the aggravated assault of an on-duty undercover Houston Police Department narcotics officer and a United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) special agent in the 1500 block of North Eldridge Parkway about 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 29).

The suspect, Stephen Lawrence Anderson (b/m, DOB: 12-30-79), is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance in the 248th State District Court. Anderson was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries then taken into custody.

Senior Police Officer A. A. Vanderberry, who discharged his duty weapon, is assigned to the Narcotics Division and was sworn in as an officer in October 1991. Officer Vanderberry was not injured in the incident.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants C. E. Elliot and T. Huynh and Senior Police Officer A. Mares reported:

Officers of a multi-agency narcotics task force attempted to arrest Anderson after a narcotics transaction by blocking his vehicle, a black Hummer, in a parking space in the 1500 block of North Eldridge Parkway. As officers wearing police raid jackets approached the Hummer, Anderson used his vehicle as a battering ram and repeatedly struck a DEA special agent’s vehicle then drove up onto the hood. Fearing for the DEA agent’s life, Officer Vanderberry and a DPS sergeant, who were on foot, discharged their duty weapons but did not strike Anderson. Anderson pushed the DEA agent’s vehicle back far enough to drive away and officers pursued him. Anderson was detained in the 14600 block of Memorial Drive without incident.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
