February 12, 2008 - Charges are pending against a suspect arrested following a fatal traffic accident in the 9100 block of the Gulf Freeway (Interstate Highway 45 South) service road about 1:20 a.m. today.

The suspect, Jose Resendez (H/m, DOB: 9-7-81), faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Arnold and Officer S. Johnson reported:

According to witnesses, Resendez was driving a black Ford Mustang, with the victim as a passenger, at a high rate of speed in the 9100 block of the Gulf Freeway service road.  The Mustang tried to pass an 18-wheeler, and then hit an entrance ramp curb and lost control.  The vehicle then went onto the sidewalk on the right side of the service road, struck a light pole and rolled several times before ejecting the victim.  Resendez was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was treated and then taken into custody.
