Suspect Charged in Shooting Incident at 6201 West Bellfort

January 26, 2008 - Houston police are investigating an attempted burglary in which a Houston police officer shot at a suspect at 6201 West Bellfort about 1:10 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 24).

The suspect, Marcos Antonio Nieto (H/m, DOB: 4-24-76), is charged with sexual assault of a child in the 182nd State District Court. He was not injured.

Sergeant T. Woods, who discharged his duty weapon, is assigned to the Fondren Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in December 1982. Sergeant Woods was not injured in this incident.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. A. Countryman and Officer K. Lopez reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a burglary-in-progress call at 6201 West Bellfort. Sergeant Woods arrived and was told by witnesses that suspect Nieto was still on the property. Sergeant Woods and other patrol back-up units then approached the apartment supposedly being burglarized. As Sergeant Woods rounded the corner, he was immediately confronted by Nieto. Fearing for his life, Sergeant Woods discharged his duty weapon at least once, but did not strike the suspect. Nieto was then taken into custody without further incident.

As is customary in officer-involved shootings occurring within the city limits, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
