Fund for Wounded Houston Police Officer

March 16, 2009 - Members of the public wishing to help wounded Houston Police Officer R. L. Salter may now make donations to a fund designed to assist him and his family.

Senior Officer Salter was shot in the face March 5, 2009 while serving a felony warrant at 9338 E. Avenue O.  He remains hospitalized at Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.

Founded in 1993, Assist the Officer is a tax exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to providing short-term financial assistance to peace officers in the Greater Houston area who have been critically injured or disabled in the line of duty.

Programs Assist the Officer provides help with include:

Assistance with financial hardship to those officers prevented from returning to work within 30 consecutive days due to catastrophic injury in the line of duty.

Scholarships to qualifying High School seniors of those critically injured or disabled officers in need. 

Scholarships to qualifying disabled officers forced to retire due to medical disability and having to seek further education for a career change.
