Suspect Wanted, Charged in Male's Death at 11500 Southwest Freeway

March 26, 2009 - Charges have been filed against a suspect wanted in the death of a man at 11500 Southwest Freeway (U.S. Highway 59 South) service road about 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday (Mar. 24).

Phillip Wayne HarrisPhillip Wayne Harris (w/m, DOB: 10-26-76) is charged with murder in the 178th State District Court.  He is wanted in the killing of a homeless male whose identity is being withheld pending notification to family members.  A photo of suspect Harris is attached to this news release.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant P.C. Motard and Senior Police Officer C.P. Abbondandolo reported:

Suspect Harris and a woman got into an argument near a gas station at the intersection of the Southwest Freeway service road and West Bellfort.  Harris left his vehicle and began chasing the woman on foot.  Two homeless men intervened and attempted to stop Harris from pursuing the woman.  Harris went back into his van and drove towards the two men.  As the men ran from him, Harris drove the van over a curb, struck one of the men and then fled the scene.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.   

Harris was driving a white Ford Econoline van with paper plates in the back window.
