Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 5500 Pershing

May 12, 2009 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 5500 Pershing about 10 p.m. on Sunday (May 10).

The male victim, 30, of Houston, suffered a gunshot wound to the back.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The suspect, Douglas Bernard Taylor (b/m, DOB: 3-21-83), has been charged with murder in the 180th State District Court.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant B. Williams and Officer D. Gunter reported:

Patrol officers responded to a report of a suspicious person with a weapon in the 7500 block of MLK Boulevard.  Upon arrival, the officers saw a male matching the suspect’s description walking down the street naked and acting belligerent.  Taylor’s actions forced both officers to discharge their Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs) while taking him into custody.

Witnesses notified the officers that Taylor had fired several shots at two people just before police arrived, killing one person in the 5500 block of Pershing.

Homicide investigators learned that Taylor and two other people had been involved in an altercation in front of 5518 Pershing.  Taylor produced a firearm and began shooting at both people as they ran, striking one victim once in the back; killing him.

Taylor was treated and released from Ben Taub General Hospital for minor injuries.
