October 12 , 2009 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a male at 5515 Clarewood about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 10).

The victim, Luis Humberto Mendez, 28, of Houston, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officers R. Swainson and A. Mares reported:

Mr. Mendez and his girlfriend had spent Friday evening with family before returning home early Saturday morning. Upon arriving at their apartment complex, Mendez’s girlfriend began walking their dog in the courtyard, leaving Mendez in the breezeway. While in the courtyard, the woman was approached by four black males. The first three walked past her; however the fourth male, lagging several feet behind his companions, grabbed the female’s purse. The two struggled and the female began to scream. As the female fell back into some foliage, she heard multiple gunshots and observed the four males flee the scene. She immediately ran to the breezeway where she had last seen her boyfriend, Mendez, and discovered he had been shot multiple times. The female rendered first aid to Mendez until HFD personnel arrived.

The suspects are described only as four black males.
