HPD, Area Retailers Focus on Purse Thefts in "Safe Shopping Starts with YOU" Campaign

November 30, 2010 -Houston police officers joined some of the largest retailers in Houston today (Tuesday, November 30) in announcing phase two of the “Safe Shopping Starts with YOU” holiday safety campaign aimed at spreading a crime prevention message on how shoppers can best prevent purse thefts while inside a store.

Each year, especially during the holidays, retailers report distraction thefts inside stores as customers are distracted while keeping purses not properly secured in their shopping carts.

Today, HPD commanders and officers spoke to members of the media and emphasized the importance of shoppers properly securing their purses and wallets.  Officers also distributed crime prevention flyers to shoppers as they arrived at an area retailer.  Photos of today’s event are posted to this news release.

The "Safe Shopping Starts with YOU" campaign is coordinated by HPD and retailers comprising the Greater Houston Loss Prevention Alliance (GHLPA) – H-E-B, Randalls, Fiesta Mart, Kroger, Target and Walmart.  Phase one of the campaign, launched on November 15, focused on preventing burglaries of motor vehicles in shopping center parking lots.   Phases three and four will be held in coming weeks.
