Investigation Into Child's Death at 11002 Northwest Freeway

September 27, 2010 - Houston police are investigating the apparent accidental drowning of a juvenile female at 11002 Northwest Freeway (U.S. 290) about 3:05 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 24).

The victim, Kayla Zenani Giles, 10, of Chicago, Illinois, was transported to Texas Children's Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Burton and Officer M. Brady reported:

Kayla, her mother, two other siblings, an adult female cousin and her three children arrived in Houston from Chicago on Thursday (Sept. 23) and were staying at the Baymont Inn and Suiters Motel at 11002 Northwest Freeway.  On Friday afternoon (Sept. 24), the cousin took her children and Kayla swimming at the motel pool.  None of the family members knew how to swim.  Kayla made her way to the middle of the pool where she went underwater because she could not touch the bottom.  A male friend of Kayla's mother and another male staying at the hotel rescued Kayla and performed CPR until HFD paramedics arrived.  Kayla was then taken to the hospital.

No charges have been filed at this time as the investigation is continuing.
