Investigation into Shooting Incident at 4506 Sherwood

December 1, 2011 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect by a HPD officer at 4506 Sherwood about 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 30).


The identity of the suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer who discharged his duty weapon, A. Chapa, was not injured. Officer Chapa, assigned to the North Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in May 1992.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant K. Deese and Senior Police Officer B. Oxspring reported:

An undercover officer with a HPD Tactical Unit was sitting in an unmarked city-issued vehicle performing surveillance in the parking lot of the apartment complex at the above address. An adult male suspect approached the vehicle from the passenger side with a semiautomatic pistol in his hand. The suspect opened the passenger side door and attempted entry into the vehicle. The undercover officer discharged his duty weapon several times, striking the suspect. Paramedics were called and pronounced the suspect deceased.

As is customary in cases in which an HPD officer discharges a weapon causing any type of injury, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
