2nd Update: Additional Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Assault at 4200 Barberry

December 20, 2011 - Charges have been filed against a second suspect arrested in the fatal assault of a man at 4200 Barberry about 9:35 p.m. on December 11.


The suspect, Shakur Steamer (b/m, DOB: 9-19-93), is charged with murder in the 184th State District Court. Also charged in this incident is Joseph Leonard Ellis (b/m, DOB: 10-13-79), who is charged with deadly conduct in the 208th State District Court. Both are accused in the death of Patrone Brooks, 37, of Houston, who suffered blunt force trauma and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Photos of suspects Steamer and Ellis are not available at this time due to the continuing investigation.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Countryman and Officer R. Olive reported:

Houston police officers were called to Ben Taub General Hospital after Mr. Brooks died there and had trauma injuries.

A preliminary investigation led officers to 4200 Barberry where multiple bullet casings were found. It was unknown if the assault and shooting incidents were related.

Further investigation identified Ellis as one suspect in the case and, last Wednesday (Dec. 14), he was taken into custody without incident. The following day, Dec. 15, Steamer was arrested without incident and charged with theft in connection with the case. On Monday (Dec. 19), Steamer was charged with the murder of Mr. Brooks.
