Suspect Arrested, Charged in Assault at 14030 Memorial Drive


January 31, 2011 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the assault of a man at 14030 Memorial Drive about 11 p.m. last Friday (Jan. 28).

Ronald Lee Newman (w/m, DOB: 7-26-59) is charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury in the 179th State District Court for causing injuries sustained by Christopher Matthews, 33, of Houston.  Matthews was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he remains in critical condition.  A photo of Newman is attached to this news release.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant K. McGray and Senior Police Officer T. Tyler reported:

The suspect, Newman, observed his wife and Mr. Matthews in a restaurant parking lot. Newman approached and punched Matthews, who then fell to the ground and became unconscious.  Paramedics were called and transported Matthews to the hospital.

Newman was taken into custody at the scene and charged in the incident.

There is no evidence at this time indicating there was any ongoing relationship between the suspect's wife and Mr. Matthews.
