Male's Death at 10800 West Sam Houston Parkway South

June 21, 2011 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which a male suspected of setting a fire at a southwest side apartment complex jumped to his death at 10800 West Sam Houston Parkway South about 12:05 a.m. today.

The identity of the suspect, 28, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant K. Tolls and Officer K. Meek reported:

Houston Fire Department arson investigators were conducting surveillance on the suspect when they observed him start a fire at an apartment complex. HFD investigators followed the suspect and requested assistance from HPD. Officers in marked patrol vehicles pursued the suspect's vehicle, a Chevrolet Dually, to the West Sam Houston Parkway entrance ramp to U.S. Highway 59. The suspect stopped his vehicle on the ramp, got out of the truck and jumped over the ramp. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

As is customary in in-custody death incidents in which someone dies in the presence of an HPD officer, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
