Investigation into Fatal Traffic Accident at 7000 Gulf Freeway

October 13, 2011 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 7000 block of the Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) about 12:25 a.m. today.

The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant K. Shaw and Officer M. Rios reported:

A witness stated the victim, driving a red GMC pickup truck, was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on the Gulf Freeway when he lost control and struck the inside concrete wall. The truck spun around and came to a stop in the middle of the freeway. The witness stopped to assist the victim and both were standing on the freeway when the truck was struck by a black Toyota Avalon, knocking the truck into both the victim and the witness. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Toyota and the witness were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries. Neither the witness nor the driver of the Toyota appeared to be impaired.
