September 2, 2011 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested for shooting at two off-duty Houston police officers at 6969 South Loop East about 12:30 a.m. on August 25.

The suspect, Kenneth Russell Chavis (b/m, DOB: 12-26-90), is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 230th State District Court.

The officers did not discharge their duty weapons and were not injured in this incident.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant K. Tolls and Officers K. Meek and M. Coleman reported:

Two HPD officers, off-duty and in  plain clothes, had just arrived at the Plum Creek apartment complex at the above location and saw a suspicious male hiding from them behind a dumpster in the parking lot.  Both officers then approached the suspect, who hid behind a vehicle.    As both officers got closer, the suspect pulled out a pistol, fired once at one of the officers and then fled on foot through the complex.  The officers did not have a chance to identify themselves or take any police action.

Further investigation and witness statements identified Chavis as the suspect in this case.  On Wednesday (Aug. 31), Chavis turned himself in to Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies without incident.
