Suspect Arrested in Shooting Incident at 6400 Carver

July 03, 2012 - Charges are pending against a suspect who fired a shot at a Metro Transit Authority police officer, who then discharged his duty weapon at 6400 Carver about 12:45 a.m. today (July 3).

The suspect, Derwin Gerhard Haynes (b/m, DOB: 8-8-64), faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, felony evading in a motor vehicle and failure to stop and give information.  His photo is not available until the charges are filed in a court.

Neither the Metro PD officer (R. Smith) who discharged his weapon nor the suspect was injured in the incident.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant T. Simmons and Officer J. Horn reported:

Metro Officer Smith saw suspect Haynes commit several traffic violations and the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  Haynes refused to stop his vehicle and led the officer on a pursuit.  While in the 6400 block of Carver, Haynes lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch.  The Metro officer ordered Haynes out of the vehicle.  Haynes ignored the commands and started to crawl out the passenger side window.  At that time, Haynes fired a shot at the officer, who then discharged his weapon.  Suspect Haynes then fled on foot.  He was eventually located hiding in the 2400 block of Dalview after an extensive search by backup officers and K-9 units.
