Suspect Arrested, Charged in Traffic Accident at 6200 South Freeway

July 24, 2012 -Houston police have arrested a suspect charged in a traffic accident that critically injured a man in the 6200 block of the South Freeway (State Highway 288) about 8:45 p.m. on Monday (July 23).

Jerry Scott Quiroa (H/m, DOB: 5-24-94) is charged with felony racing on a highway in the 180th State District Court.  A photo of suspect Quiroa is attached to this news release.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Usher and Officer N. Luu reported:

Quiroa was driving a white Honda Civic northbound on the South Freeway when witnesses reported he was racing the driver of a blue Chevrolet Impala. Both vehicles were weaving in and out of traffic.  As Quiroa and the victim neared the MacGregor exit, both vehicles collided and slid up the embankment.  Quiroa's Civic then struck the guardrail.  The Chevy struck the MacGregor Street overpass and slid down, striking the guardrail and catching fire.  The driver of the Impala was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he remains in critical condition.  Quiroa was uninjured and was taken into custody at the scene.
