Armed Suspect Wounded at 15800 Blue Ridge

June 20, 2012 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect by a Houston police officer in the 15800 block of Blue Ridge about 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday (June 19).

The male suspect, 32, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Officer S. Howze, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Howze was sworn in as an officer in June 2009 and is assigned to the Southwest Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R. Rodriguez and Senior Police Officer M. Condon reported:

Officer Howze was flagged down by a citizen regarding a male suspect walking in the street with a pistol. Officer Howze made contact with the suspect and gave him repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon, which the suspect ignored. At some point, the suspect pointed his weapon at a vehicle with several persons inside. Fearing for the safety of the individuals in the vehicle, Officer Howze discharged his duty weapon and struck the suspect. The suspect was then taken to the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
