Houston Police Department
Fatal Traffic Accident at 2900 North Shepherd

May 1, 2012 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 2900 North Shepherd about 4:50 a.m. today (May 1).

The deceased male, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Francois and Senior Police Officer R. Ontiveros reported:

A patrol officer received a description of a white Honda Accord seen leaving the scene of a burglary of a motor vehicle.  The officer, traveling north on North Shepherd, saw the vehicle (Honda) traveling at a high rate of speed south on North Shepherd.  The officer activated the emergency equipment on his patrol vehicle, made a U-turn and attempted to catch up to the speeding suspect's vehicle.  Prior to officers catching up to the vehicle, the fleeing driver could not make a right curve due to excessive speed and crossed over into the northbound lanes and struck a Toyota Tundra truck and then a large commercial box truck head-on.  Neither truck driver was injured.  Paramedics pronounced the Honda's driver (suspect) dead at the scene.

The investigation is continuing.
