Houston Police Department
Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 2019 Dewalt

May 25, 2012 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which two undercover Houston police officers fatally shot an armed suspect who stabbed one of the officers at 2019 Dewalt about 9:15 p.m. on Thursday (May 24).

The suspect, Kevin Bernard Hunter (b/m, DOB: 9-25-60), was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officer, a 20-year veteran of HPD, was treated and released from Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital.  That officer, along with a second officer, a three-year veteran, discharged their duty weapons in the incident.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R. Rodriguez and Officer J. Dominguez reported:

The two undercover officers were in plain clothes and conducting surveillance in an unmarked police vehicle that was parked in a vacant lot near the above address.  Two males approached their vehicle.  One of the males began beating on the vehicle and yelling profanities at the officers.  Hunter then stated he was going to kill the officers and began stabbing and slashing at one of the officers with a box cutter.  When the suspect stabbed the officer in the upper left forearm, both officers discharged their weapons and struck the suspect.  Paramedics pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.  The injured officer was transported to the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
