Houston Police Department
Investigation Into Incident at 2900 South Gessner

February 14, 2012 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by an HPD officer at 2900 South Gessner #903 about 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 13).

The suspect, Kenny Detrellas Montgomery (b/m, DOB: 11-30-78), was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer who discharged his weapon, J. Fisher, assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in December 2002. He was not injured in this incident.

HPD Homicide Division Officers J. Dominguez and C. Hassig reported:
Patrol officers were dispatched to a suspicious event call at the Woodchase Apartments at the above address. The caller stated her husband (suspect Montgomery) was inside their locked apartment with the couple's 1-year-old son and an unknown female. The unknown female was able to retrieve the wife's phone number and began to send her text messages stating the suspect was threatening both her and the baby with a knife. When officers arrived, the suspect would not open the locked front door. Officers, hearing the woman scream inside, forced entry through the door. Once inside, officers saw the suspect holding the baby in his arms, continually putting the knife to the throat of the child. Officers verbally engaged the suspect before the suspect fled into the bathroom with the baby and attempted to shut the door. Officer Fisher, fearing for the safety of the baby, discharged his weapon and struck the suspect.

The baby was recovered by officers and was uninjured. The suspect was found in possession of a butcher knife with a 7 inch blade.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
