Houston Police Department
Suspect Charged in 1997 Fatal Shooting Investigation

July 3, 2013 - Charges have been filed against a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man at 6055 Beekman about 7:30 p.m. on March 2, 1997.

The male suspect, who was 15 years old at the time of the incident, is being referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities on a capital murder charge.  A photo of the suspect, who is currently in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) on an unrelated incident, is not available for release at this time. It is expected the suspect will be certified as an adult in this incident.  Until then, his identity is not releaseable at this time.

The victim, Jevonnie T. Jenkins, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant P. Motard reported:

Mr. Jenkins and a male friend were on the front porch of the friend's home at the above address when an older model car drove slowly down Beekman and stopped just past the house.  The vehicle backed up and the suspect, along with another male, exited the rear of the vehicle, approached Jenkins and asked about another person.  Jenkins and his friend denied knowing the person.  As the suspects were about to walk away, they pulled out guns and demanded money from both men.  After robbing both men, the suspects attempted to enter the residence.  Jenkins and his friend then attempted to enter the residence and lock the door before the suspects could enter.  Both suspects entered the residence and began shooting.  Jenkins was struck by the gunfire while his friend managed to run to the back of the house and avoid being shot.

HPD homicide investigators responded to the scene and a preliminary investigation was opened, with all possible leads exhausted.

In the Spring of 2013, the suspect, now 32 years of age and in TDCJ custody, wrote a letter to judicial authorities, admitting his involvment in this incident.  The suspect was later interviewed by HPD homicide investigators and admitted to being involved in Jenkins' death.
