Houston Police Department
HPD Officer Wounded, Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 600 Saddle Rock

March 18, 2012 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which a Houston police officer suffered gunshot wounds and an armed suspect was fatally shot at 600 Saddle Rock about 12 a.m. today (March 18).

The male suspect, Jared Albert Alvarez (H/m, DOB: 7-25-80), was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer W. Fikes suffered gun shot wounds to both arms and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in good condition.  Officer J. Dodson, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Both officers are assigned to the North Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in September 2010.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants T. Simmons, A. Versluis and Senior Police Officer T. Andrade reported:

Officers Dodson and Fikes were patrolling the north side of Houston when they observed Alvarez driving a blue Ford Explorer erratically.  The officers initiated a traffic stop, but Alvarez refused to stop his vehicle and turned onto Saddle Rock.  Alvarez then drove down the cul-de-sac and tried to elude officers by driving in reverse once he reached the end of the street. His vehicle became stuck on a large rock.  Officer Fikes exited the patrol vehicle and suspect Alvarez pulled a gun and shot him, striking him in both arms.  Officer Dodson, in fear of his safety and for the safety of his fellow officer, then discharged his duty weapon.  Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene.  Officer Fikes was transported to the hospital.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
