Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 10225 Scott Street

October 25, 2013 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which an armed suspect, who was assaulting a female, was fatally shot by an officer at 10225 Scott Street about 10:25 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 24).

The suspect, Matthew Deshune Swiney (b/m, DOB: 4/4/91), was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The female victim, 47, who suffered head trauma and stab wounds, was transported to the same hospital in serious condition.

HPD Officer A. Garza Jr., who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Garza is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division and was swon in as an officer in June 2012.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant T. Simmons and Senior Police Officer T. Miller reported:

Officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving a suspect with a weapon at the above address. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Swiney, who answered the door armed with a hammer. He then shut the door and barricaded himself inside the apartment. Shortly thereafter, officers heard the female victim screaming and looked through the window to see Swiney armed with a knife and dragging the victim. Officers gave Swiney multiple verbal commands for him to drop the knife. The suspect ignored the commands and attempted to stab the victim. Officer Garza, fearing for the victim's safety, discharged his duty weapon more than one time, striking Swiney, who was later pronounced dead.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
