February 14, 2014 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 14500 block of Hempstead Highway about 9 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 13).

The male victim, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant C. Nickerson and Officer D. Henley reported:

The victim was driving a black Toyota Camry northbound on Hempstead Highway when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle veered off the roadway and landed in a ditch. A preliminary investigation determined the driver attempted to stop, but was unable to do so.

It is unknown at this time if the driver suffered a medical condition.

The investigation is continuing.
