Houston Police Department
Investigation into Incident at 5700 West Little York

January 17, 2014 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which an HPD officer discharged his weapon at 5700 West Little York about 8:40 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 16).

The suspect, Jordan Baker (b/m, DOB: 2-5-87), was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Officer J. Castro, who discharged his weapon, was not injured in this incident.  Officer Castro was sworn in as an officer in December 2003 and is assigned to the Narcotics Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Brady and Officer J. Dominguez reported:

Officer Castro was in uniform and working an extra job in the strip center at the above address.  The businesses in the center recently had been repeatedly robbed and had hired off-duty officers to provide extra security.

The officer attempted to stop a suspicious male (Baker) in the parking lot.  A brief struggle and foot chase ensued.  At some point, Baker stopped fleeing and, while reaching into his waistband, charged at the officer.  Officer Castro, fearing for his life, discharged his duty weapon one time, striking Baker.

As is customary when an HPD officer discharges his weapon in the city limits, this case will be investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
